“Higher education should be affordable”

THANJAVUR: Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University Dr.V.N.Rajasekaran Pillai has called for private public participation in providing quality higher education and enhancing its quantity delivery in the country.
Inaugurating the Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science and Technology (PRIST) University here on Sunday, Pillai said that higher education should be affordable to all.
Private initiatives in providing higher education is on the increase in the country in general and in Tamil Nadu in particular. Tamil Nadu took the lead in providing many colleges the autonomous status once upon a time.
Now it the era of Universities and deemed universities have now been changed to Universities. It is high time that colleges are delinked from affiliation.
Affiliation system prevails only in India now. Characteristic of a University is providing academic and professional mobility. There is a need to upgrade existing colleges into Universities.
The Knowledge Commission has said that there is a need for 1,500 Universities in the country.
Now there are only 360 Universities or so. There are 18,000 colleges out of which 5,000 colleges can be upgraded into Universities.
The growth and enrollment of students is ten per cent now in Universities and colleges. In the eleventh plan, it is envisaged to increase it to 15 per cent.
He called for re-emergence of the University system in the country.
Prof.P.Murugesan, Chancellor of the University, Dr.R.Lakshmipathi, Publisher, Dinamalar, Latha Pillai, Pro-vice-chancellor, Indra Gandhi National Open University, Dr.S.Muthukumaran, former Vice-chancellor, Bharathidasan University, S.Mohan, Vice-chancellor, PRIST University, Prof.C.Nagarajan, Pro-chancellor, Academic, PRIST University also spoke.
