Women Development Cell formed

M. Balaganessin

In Pudukottai District Central Co-operative Bank

It will create awareness on women-oriented bank schemes among girls in schools and colleges

Members of self-help groups will be the maximum beneficiaries

PUDUKOTTAI: The Pudukottai District Central Co-operative Bank (PDCCB) has started a Women’s Development Cell to cater to their banking needs.

Keeping with the norms of the National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD), the Women Development Cell is manned by an Assistant General Manager (Credit) and an Assistant Manager.

The objective of starting the cell is to ensure that 30 per cent of the PDCCB’s total transactions were through women by 2009-10, at its head office in Pudukottai as well as its 20 branches in the district, the Joint Registrar and Special Officer of the PDCCB T. Ramanidevi told The Hindu on Saturday. She said that intensive campaigns were being conducted in the district motivating women to take maximum advantage of the Cell and the campaign had so far been launched at places including Viralimalai, Keeramangalam, Gandarvakottai and Andakulam, motivating women to avail themselves of the bank’s various credit schemes. “Except the head office, the branches will sanction loans to women,” Ms. Ramanidevi said.

The Cell is, however, not to be looked upon as a special unit for sanctioning loans to women.

“We will ensure participation of prospective women depositors during our deposit mobilisation drive too,” she says.

The Cell would also launch awareness on women-oriented bank schemes among girls and women in schools and colleges.

Taluk-level gender sensitisation programmes and the role of women in banking would also be held in the district.

The women members of the self-help groups would be the maximum beneficiaries of the cell.

As many as 4,700 accounts had so far been opened by the cooperative banks in the district. The Cell would ensure starting of more accounts as well as sanctioning of more loans to the SHGs.

The Cell would identify SHG women entrepreneurs in rural areas and sanction a maximum loan of Rs. Five lakh for starting soap unit, bakery, stone quarry and brick kilns. No collateral security would be required, as the assets created would be mortgaged with the bank.

Maternity loan

The Cell would sanction maternity loan of Rs.2,000 to each pregnant women members of SHGs. This year, 29 pregnant women had been sanctioned Rs.58,000 so far. Working women would get a loan equivalent to five times of their salary or Rs. One lakh. “We have sanctioned Rs.1.18 crore to 529 working women,” she said.

On the achievements of the Cell since its inception this year, Ms. Ramanidevi said that a total of 5,865 women members of 356 self-help groups had been sanctioned loans to the tune of Rs.3.31 crore. It included Rs.44.10 lakh sanctioned to 211 women entrepreneurs who had started manufacturing hallow-blocks, soap and other value-added agro-industrial products.

A total of 55 physically-disabled women had been sanctioned self-employment loans to the tune of Rs.26 lakh.
