HOLY DAY: Devotees taking out a procession at Samayapuram Sri Mariamman temple on Sunday
TIRUCHI: A large number of devotees offered worship at Samayapuram Sri Mariamman Temple near here on Sunday on the occasion of the commencement of the ‘Poochorithal’ festival.
Amidst religious fervour, the celebrations commenced with the ‘Kaappu kattudal’ ritual for the presiding deity at about 9 a.m. at the end of ‘Angurarpanam.’
Earlier, Sri Vigneshwara puja, puniyavajanm, Anugnai, and Vasthu santhi ritual were performed.
Falling on the last Sunday in the Tamil month of ‘Masi,’ this is one of the important festivals of the temple and the presiding deity is believed to undergo a rigorous fast for 28 days. The usual procedure of offering holy food (Neivaethiyam) is not followed during the fast term, known as ‘pachai pattini viratham,’ and instead, only liquids such as tender coconut, buttermilk and cane-juice were offered. Legend has it that Sri Mariamman observed the fast here as a penance after the Mayasuran episode.
Elaborate arrangements were made for the smooth conduct of the festival. Vehicular traffic on the Tiruchi–Chennai sector was diverted and a large number of policemen were drafted for bandobust duty. Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments K.R. Periyakaruppan and Forest Minister N. Selvaraj were among those who participated.
