Jallikattu confined to Pongal only: court
Staff Reporter
MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here on Friday refused to permit ‘Manju Virattu’ (bullock cart race) at Devakottai in Sivaganga district stating the Supreme Court had permitted ‘jallikattu’ (bull taming) and related sports only during the ‘Pongal’ (harvest festival) season and not thereafter.
A Division Bench, comprising Justices K. Mohan Ram and S. Palanivelu, refused to stay an order passed by the Devakottai Sub-Collector on Monday denying permission for the event scheduled for Saturday.
The Judges thereafter adjourned the matter to March 11 without passing any interim orders.
During arguments, the Judges told the petitioner’s counsel that the Supreme Court, acting on a petition filed by the Animal Welfare Board of India, on December 11, 2007 stayed a High Court judgement allowing the sporting events.
Subsequently, the orders were modified on the insistence of the State government and the events were allowed subject to certain restrictions.
“Despite the modification, the stay continues to be in operation,” Mr. Justice Mohan Ram told counsel.
He disagreed with the contention that the Supreme Court order did not specifically state that the sport could be conducted only during the ‘Pongal’ season.
The Judge pointed out that the apex court modified its order only because the Assistant Solicitor General had submitted that the events were part of Pongal festival.
