‘Open discussion on breast cancer no taboo’
Early detection saves life: Jeannie Mulford Annual clinical examination stressed
HYDERABAD: Jeannie Mulford, wife of US Ambassador David Mulford said that there should be no taboo for an open discussion on breast cancer and emphasised that early detection would save lives. Speaking at a function organised on the eve of the International Women’s Day to celebrate the birth of KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases here, she said that she was told by women in some areas that it was ‘somehow a taboo’ to discuss breast cancer. This must change. There should be no shame or stigma attached.
Ms. Jeannie, who herself is a breast cancer survivor, narrated how she overcame the disease with determination. Stressing the need for women to undergo annual clinical examination, she said that she had been interacting with dozens of women of many nationalities on the issue.
Referring to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement that the US-India ties had never been better, Dr. David Mulford said that the US mission in India was the largest anywhere in the world.
He said it had representatives of 22-23 federal Government agencies covering every aspect of life between the two countries.
