NLC contract workers threaten to go on strike
Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE: The Jeeva Contract Labourers’ Union, affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), will serve a strike notice on the Neyveli Lignite Corporation management on March 13.
If the demands of the union are not met, 13,000 contract labourers will go on an indefinite strike from March 29, according to P. Kuppuswamy, AITUC secretary.
Mr. Kuppuswamy told The Hindu that the general council of the Jeeva Contract Labourers’ Union, which met at Neyveli under the chairmanship of Ukkiravel on Sunday, had passed a resolution in this regard.
It decided to take out a procession on March 13 to hand over the strike notice to the NLC management.
Their demands include implementation of the Madras High Court direction that the contract labourers be regularised on the basis of their seniority, payment of minimum bonus (pending since 2002), equal pay for equal work, free accommodation or suitable house rent allowance and recognition of the Jeeva Contract Labourers’ Union.
