PUDUCHERRY: The Archbishop of Puducherry and Cuddalore, Antonio Anandarayar, has demanded a probe into the police firing at Eraiyur in Villupuram district on Sunday morning. The Archbishop appealed to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to form an inquiry commission, headed by a magistrate, and grant compensation to the kin of the victims of the firing and those injured in the clash, according to Vicar General P. Antonisamy. Appealing to “all sections of Christians” to maintain peace, the Archbishop said the Archdiocese would take urgent steps to resolve the issues that had led to the clash between two groups. The Vicar General said that three months ago, the Archdiocese had constituted a committee to look into the demands of Dalit Christians of Eraiyur. They had sought permission to conduct a mass on Saturday evening and wanted the Archdiocese to stop discrimination.
