Ills of superstition to the fore

Shalabham

The central character in the film ‘Shalabham,’ directed by Suresh Palanchery, is a young woman suffering from a physiological problem. This turns her into an introvert and she isolates herself from those around her. In this aspect, the film may be considered a bold attempt.

But it does not remain focussed on detailing the young woman’s frame of mind and her relationships with others. Instead, it dwells on the superstitions prevailing in the village. Some dialogues seem like sermons. The story is written by the director. Screenplay and dialogues are by Madambu Kunjukuttan.

Superstitions rule

The story is set in a remote village where superstitious beliefs still holds sway. Meera (Ramya Nambeesan) is a young woman of marriageable age. But she has a physiological disorder. She has not yet attained puberty. Her mother, Sarada (KPAC Lalitha), stalls marriage proposals owing to the problem.

Both mother and daughter keep the matter under wraps for fear of ridicule and isolation.

Meera is attracted to men, especially Hari (Sudheesh), the son of tea-stall owner Kumaran (Mala Aravindan). But she fears building relationships because of her problems. Meanwhile, some disasters befall the village. The villagers come to know of Meera’s problem.

The oracle is approached and he announces that Meera is a bad omen for the village. And the villagers believe him.

A plus point of the film is the rustic charm of the village captured on camera by M.J. Radhakrishnan. The lyrics and music are by Kaithapram. The cast includes Mamukoya, Akhila and Nilambur Ayisha.

‘Shalabham’ has been produced by Azeez Kadalundy.
