REMEMBERING RUMI: Orhan Ozdemir, professor at the University of Turkey, inaugurating an international seminar on mystic poet Jalaluddin Rumi at the Calicut University seminar complex on Monday. TENHIPALAM: A two-day international seminar on Jalaluddin Rumi, the 13th century mystic poet, began at the Calicut University seminar complex on Monday. Scholars from different parts of the world are taking part in the seminar, organised by the Chair for Islamic Studies and Research. Calicut University Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi presided over the inaugural function. Faisal O. Al-Rfouh, former Jordanian Minister of Culture, president of the Gandhi Centre for Peace Studies and chairman of the Department of Political Science, University of Jordan, was the chief guest. Turkish scholar Orhan Ozdemir and poet Usha Akella presented papers on ‘Rumi’s concept of love and harmony.’ T. Mohammed Abdul Jaleel, Head of the Department of English, Calicut University, chaired the session. Ataulla Khan and A.P. Kunjamu presented papers on ‘Rumi’s poetry and philosophy.’ Prof. Zuberi released Usha Akella’s collection of Sufi poems ‘A Face that does not Bear the Footprints of the World.’ The evening marked recitation of Rumi’s poems; screening of a documentary ‘Singing Silence,’ directed by Musthafa Desamangalam, on the influence of Sufism in Kerala; and a ‘qawwali mehfil’ by Imam Azizi, Samir Binzi and Niza Azizi.
