Power crisis in North likely to be resolved in a week

Government orders immediate cleaning of transmission lines

North Indian States faced power cuts stretching up to 10 hours a day over the weekend

Frequent tripping of power lines was caused by pollution deposits and fog on insulators

Bahadurgarh: Northern India, which is reeling under long power is likely to get some respite in a week’s time as the Government has ordered remedial measures including immediate cleaning of transmission lines.

Large parts of Delhi, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh faced power cuts, stretching up to 10 hours a day over the weekend, due to frequent tripping of transmission lines caused by deposits of pollution particles and fog on insulators, leading to flash-overs.

The Government has ordered replacement of conventional insulators across India with polymer insulators, which are more resistant to humidity. The replacement is targeted to be done before November

“This will help in controlling the situation to a large extent. Cleaning of insulators in National Capital Region would not only help the region, but other states as well, as most of the electricity supplied to western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana is carried via these lines,” Power Grid Corp Executive Director (Operation Services) R. G. Yadav said.

“We had very little rains this winter. Fog causing tripping during March, the onset of summer, is unheard of,” Yadav said. The situation is expected to improve with reduced occurrence of fog.

The cleaning of insulators would be done by Power Grid, the country’s largest power transmission utility, and States of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

Power Grid has already started working on the orders. The company has called upon 400-500 technicians and workers from its other regional centres to meet the deadline of one week.

Cleaning of one insulator requires about 15 people and takes 3 to 4 hours. However, power supply would not be hit during the activity. --PTI
