Nippani Municipal Council accused of betrayal Legal action sought against its councillors DAVANGERE: Councillors of the Davangere City Corporation, cutting across party lines, have opposed the resolution passed by the Nippani Municipality, which states that Nippani and other adjoining areas will be included in Maharasthra State. They demanded that the Government pass an order superseding that of the municipality. At the maiden meeting of the corporation held here on Monday, the councillors condemned the resolution and termed the stand of their counterparts in Nippani as a “betrayal” of the State. The sought legal action against the councillors of Nippani and warned the Maharashtra Ekikarana Samiti against interfering in the affairs of the local bodies of Karnataka. Mosquito menaceMinutes before the commencement of the meeting, residents of ward number one staged a dharna in front of the municipality office demanding proper drinking water facilities. They criticised the authorities for failing to eradicate the mosquito menace and said that many people had been affected owing to mosquito bite. Leader of the Opposition K.G. Shivakumar questioned the logic behind holding the meeting on Monday, and noted that the names of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor had not been published in the State Gazette. This meeting was hence not official, he argued. Bharatiya Janata Party Councillor B. Lokesh, however, said their names had been published in the Gazette, but copies of the document had not yet reached the corporation office. ‘Nothing wrong’Commissioner of the Corporation Pranalinga Shivasali said their names had been published in the Gazette and copies of the document were expected to reach the corporation office on Monday evening. He said he had consulted senior officials in the Urban Development Department, according to whom there was nothing wrong in holding the meeting. Mr. Shivakumar argued that the Commissioner should have got the copies of the document by facsimile before convening the meeting. The corporation decided to provide all facilities such as drinking water during the Durgambika Jatra (Davangere city deity car festival) to be held here on March 18.
