Dam ushers in a new dawn for rural folks

CHANDIGARH: Construction of a dam at Dudhgarh village, 25 km from Panchkula, by the District Forest Department two years ago has ushered in prosperity for the farmers of this village. Thanks to this dam, constructed at a cost of Rs.30 lakh over an area of 53.49 hectares, the farmers are able to irrigate about a hundred acres of land.

Before the construction of this dam, the farmers had to depend on rains for irrigation. The village has 90 households with a population of 500 people, Village Sarpanch Kirana told media persons over the weekend. She disclosed that sometimes the dependency on rains used to prove fatal for the crops and the farmers had to suffer heavy losses. Since agriculture was the main livelihood of the village folk, many a time due to scanty rain, the farmers and their families were forced to endure hunger.

Now, there was a sea change, she said, as rain water accumulated in the dam and the farmers drew upon the water whenever required. This had made life a lot more easier. One of the farmers, Dharam Chand, said that tube-wells were virtually ineffective in this area for irrigation.
