Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The United Democratic Front on Monday demanded the resignation of Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, besides putting forward a four-point proposal to end violence in Kannur district. UDF convener P.P Thankachan, addressing a press conference soon after an emergency coalition meeting here, demanded convening of an all-party peace meet, a firm decision to allow the police to function independently, raids on party offices that were harbouring the accused and that stored ammunitions, and charging party leaders for abetting violence. The UDF criticised the Chief Minister for the delay in convening an all-party meeting. Mr. Thankachan said that after the recent CPI(M) State conference, the party had imposed several curbs on the Chief Minister’s functioning. “It appears that he will not respond to issues unless the party gives its clearance. It is also significant that CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan did not utter a single word on the violence. His silence is meaningful,” Mr. Thankachan said. The Home Minister did not bother to visit the violence affected areas that fell under his constituency. Had he made the necessary interventions, the violence and the political murders would not have taken place.
