THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has dismissed 171 doctors and issued show-cause notice to 113 others for unauthorised absence from duty, Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has said. The Minister said in a written reply to the Assembly on Monday that disciplinary action was being initiated against 126 doctors on the same grounds. The bond amount would be realised from doctors who had not joined duty after going for higher studies in service quota, she said. Replying to questions on the floor of the Assembly, the Minister said that one-year rural service had been made compulsory for doctors. As many as 437 vacancies in the rural service had been filled through a walk-in interview, but 212 vacancies were to be filled again. Action would be taken against unlicenced medical shops functioning in private hospitals. The corporation formed for drug purchase would function in a transparent manner. Life-saving drugs would be provided free of cost to patients below the poverty line. Revival planIndustries Minister Elamaram Karim said a revival plan comprising restructuring of loans and one-time settlement had been drawn up for sick small and medium enterprises.
