MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has sealed several offices and a canteen at the Mangaon Railway station of the Konkan Railway Corporation in coastal Raigad district for non-payment of non-agriculture tax of Rs. 84.14 lakh. The State government had ordered the Mangaon Tehsildar, Gnaneshwar Khutwad to seal the railway premises at the station after the Bombay High Court rejected the Konkan Railway’s petition against the tax and also refused to grant any interim stay against the assessment. According to a revenue department source, notices are served on the Konkan Railway stations in two other coastal districts of the State, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. The State confined its action only to those offices which are not involved in day-to-day running of railway services. It sealed even a residential quarter of an employee. The Konkan Railway had acquired 53.49 lakh square metres land in Mangaon Tehsil and had to pay the tax for 1994-2008.
