dated March 11, 1958: Indonesia situation

The leftist daily newspaper, Bintang Timur, said on March 8 that talks between President Sukarno of Indonesia and former Vice-President, Dr. Mohammad Hatta, aimed at restoring unity in the Republic, have failed. It said that Dr. Hatta, whom the rebel Government in Central Sumatra wants to be installed as Premier, told President Sukarno he would join him in leading Indonesia if the rebels were given a general amnesty. President Sukarno, after consulting the Government leaders and the combined Chiefs of Staff, decided that Dr. Hatta’s demands were too high, the newspaper said.
