Alleges that ruling party is involved in violent attacks Says government should take the lead in maintaining peace ALAPPUZHA: Janadhipathya Samrakshana Samithi (JSS) leader K.R. Gouri has demanded that the State government change its home affairs policy and take the lead to restore peace in Kannur, rocked by political violence late last week. Talking to mediapersons at her residence here on Monday, Ms. Gouri said the reported statements of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan that it was not yet time to hold talks with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to bring back peace in Kannur were “atrocious and irresponsible.” The situation in Kannur was that the ruling party itself was involved in a series of violent attacks. Law and order, which should be maintained by the government, had spiralled out of control. Although it was the responsibility of everyone to maintain peace, it was State government that had to take the lead, she said. The JSS leader condemned Sunday’s attack on the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M) party headquarters in New Delhi. Ms. Gouri said Mr. Achuthanandan should visit the violence-ridden areas of Kannur as soon as possible and sort out the differences between the CPI (M) and the BJP in the region. Ms. Gouri also said she was surprised by the “silence maintained” by CPI (M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on the issue. “Is it because he has been overwhelmed with sadness over the turn of events, or is it because he is happy?” she asked. The veteran leader also criticised the State budget, alleging that Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac had made “no provisions at all” to arrest the price rise, particularly that of rice and milk.
