We will not take the law into our hands: V.J.K. Nair

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Communist Party of India (Marxist) secretary, V.J.K. Nair, called upon party cadre to fight for the rights of workers and launch a people’s movement to solve the problems faced by the working class.

Addressing a large number of workers gathered to protest against the ransacking of his house on Sunday night, Mr. Nair said the party believed in democratic process and was committed to fighting for the rights of workers. “We will not take the law into our hands and react in the same way as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Bharatiya Janata Party workers who attacked our offices and office-bearers across the country.”

Wife assaulted

Six persons, claiming to be members of Sangh Parivar outfits, barged into the residence of Mr. Nair in Kalattur Layout in northern Bangalore on Sunday night when his wife Rajamma was alone. They brandished iron rods and knives, pushed her on the sofa and while one of them held a knife to her throat, the others searched for Mr. Nair.

When they found he was not there, they allegedly damaged household items. They allegedly abused Ms. Rajamma and the Communist Party, saying that the Communists were spreading hatred. The intruders took away Mr. Nair’s laptop and a set-top box.

About 2,000 workers from different unions participated in the rally to protest the attacks. Mr. Nair, his wife, State CPI(M) Secretariat member S.Y. Gurushant and the former MLA, Sriram Reddy, led the protest.

The rally ended near the Vidhana Soudha. The protesters demanded a ban on saffron organisations, which, they alleged, were disturbing communal harmony.

Memo to Governor

After the rally, a delegation of CPI(M) leaders went to the Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum to Governor Rameshwar Thakur. In his absence, it was received by his adviser P.K.H. Tharakan.

Mr. Nair told The Hindu that the attack on his house had neither shaken him nor his wife.

“We have been in the thick of action many times and my wife is more courageous than me.”
