Guwahati: The former Lok Sabha Speaker, Purno Agitok Sangma, on Monday resigned as a Member of Parliament from the Tura Lok Sabha constituency of Meghalaya. Mr. Sangma told The Hindu over phone from Shillong that he had faxed his resignation to Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee. “I am here to stay in Meghalaya as I have decided to return to State politics. Hence I have resigned from the Lok Sabha,” said Mr. Sangma, who has been elected to the Assembly from the Tura constituency. Mr. Sangma had announced his return to State politics while submitting his nominations for the March 3 Meghalaya Assembly poll and projected himself as the chief ministerial candidate of the NCP. Describing Meghalaya Governor S.S. Sidhu’s decision to invite Congress leader D.D. Lapang to form the government as “undemocractic,” Mr. Sangma said the newly formed alliance would file a writ petition in the Supreme Court on Tuesday to challenge the Governor’s decision.
