Bank encourages them to go for self-employment

PUDUKOTTAI: Economic emancipation has beckoned 16 women cured of leprosy at Kadayakudi hamlet in the district.

Self-reliance is a realisation of a prolonged dream for these members of Annai Indira Self-Help Group floated by Pudukkottai District Central Co-operative Bank which has opened up avenues for self-employment.

Taking the support of a non-government organisation, Joint Registrar of Co-operatives T. Ramanidevi prevailed upon these women to start a savings account with the bank’s branch at Tirumayam.

The passbooks were distributed to them by Regional Joint Registrar of Cooperatives, Pudukkottai, R.M. Jayampandian, during the International Women’s Day celebrations organised by the bank recently.

“The bank will impart training to the members in trades such as basket-knitting, running petty shops and other micro-businesses,” said Ms. Ramanidevi, who was prompted to take the initiative of extricating them from poverty following a chance visit to the village recently.

The capability of these SHGs would be assessed for bringing them under credit-linkage for economic uplift, said Mr. Jayampandian.
