MADURAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the State Government to make an announcement on setting up of a graphite unit in Sivaganga.

Addressing participants of a hunger strike here on Tuesday, the Madurai MP, P. Mohan, said that voters were promised of the facility prior to every election. Despite the Congress candidate, P. Chidambaram, becoming the Union Finance Minister, the promise had not been fulfilled.

Stating that the Union Government had encouraged import of graphite by reducing the import duty from 30 per cent to 10 per cent, he wondered why it did not set up an industry in Sivaganga where raw material was available in abundance.

Plan to establish a special economy zone at Nanguneri had not been translated into reality for more than a decade.

Mr. Mohan sought Government’s intervention in establishing labour-intensive heavy industries in southern districts.

“Service industry will generate only limited jobs,” he said pointing out that the Khadi and Village Industries Commission had created jobs for around 20,000 persons with an investment of Rs. 44 crore.

The president of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, S. Rethinavelu, said that the Government should give priority to inter-linking of rivers in the State.

The CPI(M) had called for the fast to press the State and the Centre to provide basic infrastructure and commence groundwork for IT Park and Tidel Park here immediately.
