MADURAI: “Kidneys are silent workers and silent sufferers.” Along with these words in nephrology comes a public alert too, “Are your kidneys OK?” This is the theme for the World Kidney Day on March 13 (observed on second Thursday of March every year). Statistics of kidney diseases apart, the caution comes more for diabetics and people suffering from high blood pressure, who, according to doctors, are more prone to kidney diseases and kidney failure. “Simple medical tests costing less than Rs.100 are enough for thorough screening of kidney functioning. More than 30 per cent of diabetics develop kidney disorders and hence public awareness is essential,” said K. Sampathkumar, Senior Consultant Nephrologist at the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC), here. At a press briefing held on Tuesday to mark the World Kidney Day, he said that more than 90 per cent of renal damage was silent and hence regular screening was essential. According to Dr. Sampathkumar, cases related to kidney stones needed proper clinical management to remove obstruction and if that was not done there could be permanent damage.
