Vakapalli victims not to attend court

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: The 11 women of Vakapalli, a primitive tribal village in G. Madugula mandal of Visakhapatnam agency area, who were raped allegedly by Greyhound constables on August 20 last, refused to attend the court in response to a notice served on them.

The women were issued notices by the First Class Judicial Magistrate’s court of Paderu a few days ago stating that their charges against the constables were not true according to a report submitted by the CID, which conducted an inquiry, and that they had to submit their version, if any, to the court by Wednesday. Otherwise, action would be taken against them, according to the CID report. The First Class Judicial Magistrate of Araku Valley is in-charge of the Paderu Magistrate’s court and the Vakapalli victims were expected to appear before it on Wednesday. However, a group of reporters who went to Vakapalli on Tuesday were told by the victims that they would not attend the court as they were not sure of getting justice. “We have met the Chief Minister, the NHRC and others but justice was not done. Instead, another case is being booked against us,” they said, added that they would resist any attempt of the police or officials to enter the village. However, convener of the Adivasi Ikya Porata Samiti Rama Rao Dora told The Hindu from Paderu that since the court served notices, the women would attend court.
