Up in arms: Secondary school teachers holding a demonstration in front of the office of Circle Inspector of schools to press for their demands in Berhampur on Tuesday. BERHAMPUR: Members of the Ganjam district unit of the Orissa Secondary School Teachers’ Association (OSSTA) held a dharna in front office of the Circle Inspector (CI) of schools on Tuesday. They were protesting against the alleged apathy of the State Government towards their long standing demands despite promises in the past. The agitating teachers were led by the president of the local unit of OSSTA, Kamaraju Maharana. Mr. Maharana said as per the decision of their organisation, teachers were holding similar dharna in front of all other CI offices in the State. The teachers’ wanted the ‘block grant’ system of providing grants to government aided schools abolished and teachers of block grant schools to be provided dignified pay packets. According to them a large number of schools of the State have been found eligible for government grants since 2003, but they are yet to get any government grants. The agitating teachers also wanted the teachers of block grant schools to be provided scope of promotion and career enhancement. They alleged that the State Education Minister had in the past held several discussions with the leaders of the OSSTA over these matters. But no steps were taken till date to fulfil these demands of the teachers.
