CUTTACK: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Tuesday announced that the party does not want the general elections in the country to be held earlier than due but posing a brave front declared that it is ready for the polls any moment if it was necessary. Speaking at the concluding session of the four-day State-level conference of the party here, the senior Central committee leader A. B. Bardhan said: “CPI is getting ready for the general elections.” Coming down heavily on the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre, the CPI leader alleged that the Congress party is not taking the allies into confidence in the matters pertaining to national interest. Criticising Congress’ stand on N-deal with US, Bardhan warned that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s attempt to woo BJP by terming Atal Behari Vajpayee as “Bhisma Pitamaha” would backfire. Industrial policyThe CPI also strongly opposed the Orissa Government’s industrial policy and its “uncalled for” favouritism shown towards South Korean steel major Posco at the cost of livelihood of thousands of farmers. The party general secretary D.Raja speaking at the inaugural session of the conference had indicated that CPI would continue its agitation against the proposed 12-mt Steel Plant in Jagatsinghpur district. “We have decided to observe the Orissa Day on April 1 as “Anti-Posco Day”, said the newly elected State secretary of the party Dibakar Naik. The party would launch a State-wide agitation over the issue against the State Government’s decision to dole out agricultural land, water and mines to the foreign steel company, he added. Naik, who was acting-chief of the party, was formally elected as the State secretary while Ashish Kanungo has been elected as assistant secretary of the party in the elections held on Tuesday. The party also elected a 14-member State secretariat and 125-member executive body for a term of one year.
