ALAPPUZHA: Doubts are being raised over the death of Nationalist Congress Party State committee member and gravel contractor Ashraf, 40, in an accident on Monday evening at Nooranad near Mavelikara here. Ashraf, a native of Adikatukulangara, was killed after a jeep hit the two-wheeler on which he was travelling around 7.30 p.m. on Monday near the Nooranad Parayamkulam LP School. While Ashraf died on the spot, his co-passenger Shameer sustained injuries. Those in the jeep reportedly fled immediately and there was mild tension in the area when locals prevented the police from removing the jeep. Indications that the jeep belonged to another gravel contractor, who is suspected to have nurtured a rivalry with Ashraf, raised suspicions that the incident could have been pre-planned. Residents and Ashraf’s friends and relatives have demanded a detailed probe and a hartal was observed in Adikatukulangara on Tuesday. Mavelikara Circle Inspector A. Naseem, talking to The Hindu, said the police were not ruling out any possibilities.
