KARAIKAL: The preliminary work for establishing a new fishing harbour at a cost of Rs.40 crore in Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry has started and the first phase of work costing Rs.18 crore is under way, according to senior officials of the Public Works Department here. The officials, who inspected the progress of the work, told The Hindu on Monday that natural stones (huge granite stones and boulders) were being brought from Tindivanam in Tamil Nadu and were being laid for a stretch of 400 metres from the shore into the sea for establishing the new fishing harbour. The first phase of the work would be completed in a few months and the second phase costing Rs.22 crore would begin from June or July this year. A senior PWD official said that the entire work would be completed by the middle of next year and pointed out that several works including deepening of estuary in the harbour, fishing drying and landing centre, cold storage godowns, boat repair yard would be carried out in the second phase of work. He pointed out that the fishing harbour would be a boon to fishermen of 19 coastal villages in Karaikal district as they need not go to Nagapattinam or Jagadapattinam for venturing into the sea for fishing once the harbour started functioning from the middle of next year. EmploymentA large number of youths in the coastal villages would get employment in the fishing harbour and fisher women could also participate in the auction and sale of fish. The Karaikal region would get overall development after the inauguration of the fishing harbour. A cross-section of fishermen of Karaikal told that the new fishing harbour would improve their economic condition as most of the villagers were affected by the tsunami three years ago.
