ANANTAPUR: The All India Mahila Samskrutika Sangham (AIMSS) has expressed serious concern over the increasing rate of atrocities against women. The number of criminals involved in crimes against women is also on the rise as they are not being nailed by the law. Speaking at a meeting organised by the women’s body to celebrate Women’s Day here on Tuesday, its State president G. Lalitha said though there are several laws in place to check atrocities against women, they are not being implemented properly. Empowerment of women is still a distant dream in the country as even the first step in that direction, one-third reservation for women in the law-making bodies, is not being allowed by political parties. She stressed the need for a movement for achieving social equality for women, who comprise half of the population, and against their oppression. Tracing the origin of the day, district secretary of Social Unity Centre of India (SUCI) said it started with a movement for voting rights to women in Europe in the early 20th century. He expressed concern over the decreasing proportion of women in the population due to the increasing incidence of foeticide.Secretary of Telecom Women’s Association Y. Ramadevi said the day should not be observed as mere formality but should be part of the fight for liberation of women.
