VIZIANAGARAM: The Andhra-Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee member, Chokkari Gangaram alias Komma, and an unidentified top Maoist’s courier were killed in an encounter with the police on the Kedaripuram-Elwinpeta road around 11.30 p.m. on Monday.
During routine checking of vehicles, the duo took a U-turn on their motorcycle in an attempt to flee. When the police asked them to stop, they opened fire and the police also fired in retaliation. Both the men were killed and their bodies were found near the motorcycle.
Arms recovered
A revolver and a tapancha were recovered from the spot, Superintendent of Police Vikram Singh Mann stated at a press conference here on Tuesday. Mr. Mann said that Komma, a native of Palasapuram in Sompeta mandal, graduated from Arts College, Srikakulam, and joined the Kondabaredi dalam in 1990.
Gangaram was involved in several offences, including the killing of four CRPF constables, and snatching of Rs. 7.5 lakh from them at Cooneru railway station in 2005. He had also participated in raids on the Anakapalle and Chodavaram police stations and the Chodvaram Sub-Jail in 2003.
