Left parties walk out

Protest non-implementation of Koneru panel report

‘Government accepts 90 out of 104 recommendations of the panel’

Revenue Minister raps Left leaders on land distribution issue

HYDERABAD: The Assembly witnessed uproar over Government’s alleged failure to implement the recommendations of Koneru Ranga Rao Committee on distribution of land to the poor, leading to a walkout by members of CPI(M) and CPI.

The issue figured through a question tabled by Chada Venkat Reddy of CPI who wanted to know as to what the Government had done so far to implement the committee recommendations and whether they were confined to paper. Revenue Minister D. Prasada Rao, seeking to blunt his criticism, replied that the Government had accepted 90 out of the 104 recommendations of the Committee and issued orders to implement 41.

He said a special commissioner had been appointed to implement the committee report by holding periodical reviews with district Collectors. “Land distribution programme is always close to the heart of the Congress party and the present government, headed by Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, in particular, does not need lectures by others on this subject”, he said, citing distribution of over 6 lakh acres so far to the poor.

Suggestions invited

Mr. Rao said it was unfortunate that CPI(M) and CPI were criticising the Government instead of appreciating it for the programme. He asked them to make suggestions instead, facilitating the programme to be taken to its logical end.

Mr. Venkat Reddy complained that funds had not been set aside to implement the Koneru report and that the Government was undermining ‘Bhoo Poratam’ of Left parties.

He sought regularisation of occupation of lands by the poor at Rayavaram near Vizianagaram, Hafeezpet in Hyderabad. Mr. Narsimhaiah contended that over 40 lakh acres was still available in the State for distribution and that the land commission was not functioning on scientific lines. Both of them walked out of the House in protest, followed by their party members.
