SSLC examinations begin today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 4,51,470 candidates are scheduled to appear for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations beginning Wednesday. As many as 2,28,479 candidates are girls. The examinations will be held in 2,723 centres, including 15 in Gulf states and nine in the Lakshadweep.

This was disclosed at a press conference by Education Minister M.A. Baby here on Tuesday. While 3,86,171 candidates will write the examinations in Malayalam, 59,411 candidates will write the examinations in English, 2,366 candidates in Tamil and 3,522 in Kannada.

The maximum number of candidates — 34,424 — will appear for the examinations from the Tirur education district. The least number of students will appear from the Kuttanad education district — 2,537. On the basis of revenue district, the maximum number of candidates will appear from Malappuram — 70,059. The least number of candidates will appear from Wayanad — 10,353.

This year the question papers have been kept at nationalised banks and in government treasuries. To ensure proper distribution of question papers to the respective chief superintendents, clusters have been formed in each district education office. It will be officers of the cluster who reach the question papers to the respective centres.

District examination monitoring committees chaired by the District Collector and including the district Superintendent of Police and the deputy director of education concerned will oversee security operations relating to the question papers.

A State monitoring cell has been set up at the Pareeksha Bhavan here; officials at the cell will be in contact with the 300-odd clusters across the State on a half-hourly basis.

As many as 41 valuation camps have been readied for the evaluation of the answer sheets; the State has been divided into four zones for this purpose.

The first phase of evaluation will be done from April 3 to April 11. The second phase will be from April 15 to 23. Along with the SSLC examinations, the THSLC, the THSLC (special schools), AHSLC and the SSLC for the hearing impaired examinations will begin on March 12.
