Legal Aid and Advice Centre inaugurated in Udupi

‘Elementary knowledge of law is a must’

‘They can help motivate rural women’

Udupi: Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha said on Tuesday that anganwadi workers should take active interest in disseminating legal information to women in rural areas.

She was speaking as the chief guest at a function to inaugurate a Legal Aid and Advice Centre here.

The function was organised by the District Legal Service Authority, the Udupi Advocates Association and the Department of Women and Child Welfare.

Ms. Hemalatha said that anganwadi workers should have elementary knowledge of law as they work closely with women in rural areas. Women spoke about their problems to them.

Hence, they were in a better position to motivate these women to avail themselves of legal advice and aid.

In this process, the anganwadi workers would gain more knowledge of legal matters. “Once women gain confidence, they can tackle their problems courageously,” she said. Though this centre had been created specially for the sake of women, even men could avail themselves of its facilities.

The centre (located at the Vadiraja Complex, Old Post Office Road) would function twice every week from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. “The aim of this centre is to help people,” Ms. Hemalatha said.

District and Sessions Judge K.N. Phaneendra inaugurated the centre. President of Udupi Advocates Association Mattar Ratnakar Hegde presided over the programme. Principal Civil Judge (Senior Division) A.M. Ramachandrayya and Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare Department Vijayalakshmi Shenoy were present.
