Women seize liquor bottles

Shama Sunder

HASSAN: A group of women stormed into five houses at Deve Gowda Nagar in Hassan on Tuesday and “seized” liquor bottles and handed them over to the police.

The families living in these houses were allegedly selling liquor illegally.

Deve Gowda Nagar, situated four km away from Hassan on Hassan-Gorur Road, was formed four years ago. It has 800 houses. There are two schools, one Urdu-medium and the other Kannada-medium. There is an anganwadi centre.

The colony does not have a liquor shop. However, when the five families started selling liquor, men, most of whom are daily wage workers, easily fell prey to the brew. The families did not heed the advise of well meaning people against selling liquor.

However, when their men started quarrelling with them under the influence of alcohol, women thought that enough was enough. And, on Tuesday Swarnamma and Lalithamma, who led the other women in the colony, raided the five houses, which belonged to Ranganatha, Chandra, Gowramma and two others. Initially, the house owners resisted the raid claiming that they did not have any liquor bottles. However, the residents forcefully entered the houses and “seized” the liquor bottles. Then they went to the Town Police Station and lodged a complaint.

Speaking to The Hindu, Girijesh, Circle Inspector of Police, said that he rushed to Deve Gowda Nagar with his staff and by the time they reached, the liquor bottles stocked in these houses were shifted.

They arrested Chandra and Ranganatha. They also registered a case against Venkatesh, Kariyamma, Jayanna and Kumar for selling liquor without permit/licence, he said.
