Attempted pilferage causes oil spill at Haldia
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA: About eight to 10 barrels of crude leaked from the Haldia Barauni Crude Pipeline of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) at Haldia in Purba Medinipur in West Bengal. The pipeline is 656-km-long and is used for transporting crude from tankers docked at Haldia Dock Complex to IOC.
Sources said that it appeared to be a case of attempted pilferage which took place on Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Most of the crude that had spilled was recovered through IOC’s special oil spill recovery mechanism, an official source told The Hindu from Haldia. Each of these barrels hold about 100 litres.
The incident was detected through the Computerised Supervisory Control and Data Access mechanism. Sources said that crude oil is often pilfered for use in furnace oil for which it is a good substitute.
