Letters to the Editor
When our hockey team won the Asia Cup last year, was it given the same importance and encouragement as our cricket team is given when it wins tournaments? For the first time in eight decades, the team has failed to qualify for the Olympics. It is not just the players who are to be blamed for this. The indifference and lack of recognition, encouragement and support are also to blame. With the national game and animal in peril, it is time to check what happened to our national bird.
J.P. Saulina Arnold,
P.B. Sundara Rajan,
Syed Babajan,
One good thing is the absence of emotional reactions from the people. Had cricketers performed badly, their houses would have been stoned, effigies burnt and so on. It is not enough for an inspiring film to be made on hockey, when the reality is that the hero of the film has made more money than the earnings of all the hockey players put together. Let us hope the administrators wake up to the sad fact that we are slowly but surely losing out on the world stage.
Ashok Viswanath,
