Corrections and clarifications

  • The caption of the accompanying AP photograph in a hockey report “A tragedy of Olympian proportions” (“Sport”, March 11, 2008) was “Silver Doesn’t Glitter: Dilip Tirkey, V.R. Raghunath and Rajpal Singh are a despondent lot on the podium after India finished second best in Santiago.” It was an error and should have been “… Dilip Tirkey, Bimal Lakra (centre) and Sardara Singh.”

  • In a report “Fasuba beats Chambers to 60m gold” (“Sport”, March 9, 2008), the third paragraph said that “Dwain Chambers, controversially selected by Britain, … took silver in a personal best of 6.54s”, while the results column gave it as “Men: 60m: 1. Olusoji Fasuba (Nigeria) 6.51s; 2. Kim Collins (St. Kitts) 6.54; 2. Dwain Chambers (GBR) 6.54.” The Sports Desk clarifies that Chambers did get the silver, as mentioned in the third paragraph and the results column, but what was left out was that veteran sprinter Kim Collins was involved in a photo-finish with Chambers for second place. (The report was on the World Indoor championships at Valencia, Spain.)

  • The first paragraph in a report “Focus on loan waiver at talk on budget” (City edition – Visakhapatnam, March 11, 2008, page 3) was “Experts at a talk on Union budget 2008 held here on Monday dissected the waiver of agriculture loans to an extent of Rs. 60,000 proposed by the [Union] Finance Minister and found that it was not completely explained, not all that beneficial and likely to be a burden on the banks.” It should have been Rs.60,000 crore.
