Mascarenhas picked in IPL second auction

G. Viswanath

James Hopes fetches highest price

Mumbai: Dimitri Mascarenhas, who is not on central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), became the first England player to make the DLF IPL Twenty20 league when he was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for a three-year contract and for an annual fee of $100,000.

With Mascarenhas’s entry, the IPL will feature players from all the full member countries of the International Cricket Council.

Mascarenhas is regarded as a close friend of Shane Warne, captain and coach of the Rajasthan Royals, owned by the franchise, Emerging Media.

Rajasthan Royals also picked up Australian Shane Watson for $125,000, South African Morne Morkel for $60,000 and Pakistani left-arm seamer Sohail Tanvir for $100,000. Having spent only around $2.9 million at the inaugural auction here on February 20, Emerging Media had sufficient money left to make the most of the second auction.

Mascarenhas’s name did not figure in the list of 25 players announced by the IPL on Monday. However, the Hampshire allrounder obtained the no objection certificate from his county and the ECB.

Ninth overseas player

With 29 overseas players initially available for the second auction, the IPL gave the eight franchises the option of picking a ninth overseas player, as against the maximum limit of eight set in the Invitation To Tender (ITT).

A franchise representative explained that the concession was given because some players would not be available for all the matches of the inaugural season. Fraser Catellino, CEO, Emerging Media (Jaipur), said: “We have eight players for the first season. Today we signed Sohail Tanvir only for one year.”

Similarly Royal Challengers, Bangalore has nine overseas players in Jacques Kallis, Cameron White, Mark Boucher, Nathan Bracken, Dale Steyn, S. Chanderpaul, Misbah-ul-Haq, Abdur Razzaq and Ross Taylor.

New Zealander Taylor has been signed for one year at $100,000. Mumbai Indians picked up South African Ashwell Prince at a base price of $50,000.

Hyderabad and Chennai did not pick anyone on Tuesday when the ‘A’ and ‘B’ list came up for auction. Chennai could not because it had a little over $20,000 left after the first auction and the bidding amount was set at $50,000 at the second auction. But Chennai chose Tamil Nadu juniors Abhinav Mukund, Napoleon Einstein and Vidarbha’s Viraj Kadbe from the under-19 lot.

Mohali’s choices

Team Mohali owned by Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia picked Australians James Hopes for $300,000 (the highest bid at the second auction), Luke Pomersbach for $50,000 and New Zealander Kyle Mills for $150,000.

Kolkata owned by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment picked Pakistan’s Salman Butt for $100,000 and Mohammad Hafeez for $100,000.

Lalit Modi, Chairman and Commissioner, IPL, explained that the under-19 players who had played the Ranji Trophy will receive $50,000 and a one-season contract and those who had not would receive $30,000. Franchisees picked up 14 under-19 players.

As Manish Pandey, Taruwar Kohli, Ajitesh Argal, Sreevats Goswami and Viraj Kadbe have not played the Ranji Trophy, they will receive $ 30,000.

“The franchisees have to finalise the squad on March 18 and if they need more players, they can come back to IPL,” said Modi. Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf was not sold again, but since he’s an IPL contract player, he will be paid $125,000.

Second auction results: Rajasthan Royals (Emerging Media): Dimitri Mascarenhas (England) $100,000, Shane Watson (Australia) $125,000, Sohail Tanvir (Pakistan) $100,000, Morne Morkel (South Africa) $60,000. U-19: Ravindra Jadeja (Saurashtra), Taruwar Kohli (Punjab).
