Tickling the taste buds: Participants at a food preparation competition held in Bangalore on Tuesday as part of International Women’s Day.

BANGALORE: What if you could combine a playful evening for your children with a basketful of shopping for yourself under the shade of large trees?

If the idea sounds appealing, then heading towards Jawahar Bal Bhavan in Cubbon Park is the right thing to do.

You can soak in the culinary, sartorial and artistic creativities on display at the exhibition of products by 200 self-help groups from all over the State, while your children have their bit of fun on slides and swings.

The exhibition organised by the Department of Women and Child Development will end on Thursday.

Warning

A warning though – the prices of these products are relatively low so much so you could go a tad overboard and create a hole in your purse. Fashionable jute bags are available in the range of Rs. 120 to Rs. 250. Kurtas with interesting designs are on sale for a price range of Rs. 160 to Rs. 250.

Little pieces of jewellery are also on sale.

Those looking for home décor products will find the exhibition worth a visit.

For instance, a painted tulsi pot with an attached “diya” and gold-painted trinkets was snapped up by an enthusiastic buyer for Rs. 130.

A keen eye is likely to spot more such attractive products.

Poor turnout

Unfortunately for the artisans, the venue is in an unlikely location and the turnout is poor. Yusuf said that he sold Channapatna toys worth only Rs. 150 on Monday.

“In other places, we have had business worth more than Rs. 5,000 a day,” he added.
