Academics condemn attack on Sundarayya Kendram
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Academics and artistes on Tuesday condemned the attack on the Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Hyderabad by Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh activists on Monday night. In a statement issued under the banner of the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust, the signatories urged civil society to reject the “politics of intolerance, hate and vandalism.”
‘Totally unacceptable’
Stating that the attack on such a renowned cultural centre was “totally unacceptable,” it said it was against all norms of civil society. Concerned about increasing acts of cultural policing and fascist attacks, SAHMAT sought to point out that the Kendram had for the last two decades been striving to preserve the composite cultural heritage of Indian civilisation.
The signatories to the statement include Teesta Setalvad, Amar Farooqui, Arjun Dev, Prabhat Patnaik, Utsa Patnaik, Jayati Ghosh, Badri Raina, D.N. Jha, C.P. Chandrasekhar, Prabir Purkayasta, Madhu Prasad, Indira Chandrasekhar, M.M.P. Singh, Irfan Habib, Shireen Moosvi, M.K. Raina and K.N. Panikkar.
