Rs.61 crore sought for strengthening road and drainage facilities

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Corporation has sought Rs.61 crore from the Government for strengthening the roads and drainage network in the city, especially in the suburbs, the Mayor, Sarubala R. Tondaiman, said here on Wednesday.

Replying to a debate on the Corporation Budget 2008-09, Mrs. Tondaiman was confident of getting the financial assistance. The civic body has sought half of the estimate as grant and the other half as loan.

She also disclosed that the Corporation would soon recruit nine doctors and 200 sanitary workers.

The Rs.144-crore drinking water supply augmentation scheme had reached the tender stage and the project would be completed within a year. The project on manufacturing bio-manure from the accumulated solid wastes at the Ariyamangalam garbage dump, taken up under the Build Operate and Transfer Scheme, would commence within the next one month. Once the accumulated garbage was disposed, the wholesale market from the Gandhi Market Complex in the city could be shifted there.

The Corporation had planned to acquire modern vehicles for solid waste collection.

Mrs. Tondaiman disclosed that 28 health camps would be held in the city under the Varummun Kappom scheme.

Corporation Commissioner T.T. Balsamy said the Integrated Housing and Slum Development programme would be implemented in the city at a cost of Rs.19.96 crore.
