Work soon on fishing harbour

Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL: The Central Government had decided to set up fishing harbours at Colachel and Thengapattinam and the work would begin soon, said Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan.

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, he said the State had sent proposals to the Centre for the projects in Kanyakumari district.

The Colachel project would be implemented at Rs 27.10 crore and the Thengapattinam scheme at Rs.38.10 crore.

Construction of these harbours is a dream of fishermen. Because of absence of such harbours, there is social tension between the fishermen of Kerala and Kanyakumari district. Migration of fishermen from the coastal villages of the district, particularly Colachel, one of the worst affected areas in tsunami, could be stopped, residents said.
