A team of doctors visits the hunger strike camp

Lawyers submit memorandum to Governor

BERHAMPUR: A six-member delegation of the Ganjam Bar Association held discussions with Governor Muralidhar Chandrakant Bhandare in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday with regard to their demand for establishment of a permanent bench of the High Court in Berhampur.

Meanwhile, the former deputy Speaker and BJP leader, Ramchandra Panda, continued hunger strike. He launched the hunger strike in front of the office of the Ganjam Bar Association.

He threatened not to withdraw his hunger strike till the State government passed a resolution regarding establishment of High Court benches and sent it to the Centre for necessary action. A team of doctors visited the spot thrice to check up the health condition of Mr. Panda. The delegation was led by association president S.N. Ratha and secretary Mohan Singari. Mr. Singari said the Governor had a patient discussion over the issue. The lawyers also handed over a memorandum regarding their demand to the Governor.

The Governor discussed the details of pending cases from south Orissa in High Court and infrastructure facility in Berhampur.

Dig at government

The lawyers also expressed their displeasure over the setting up of a commission to enquire about the issue of demand for High Court benches in the State by the government. Mr. Singari said the governor assured the delegation that he would take up the matter with the State government.

Meanwhile, the association also decided to boycott the elections of the State Bar Council scheduled to be held on March 15.
