Mega artificial limb camp gets under way

BERHAMPUR: A mega free artificial limbs’ fixation camp was inaugurated at the Berhampur stadium on Wednesday. It is envisioned to make this camp largest of its kind in Orissa with highest number of artificial limbs getting fixed to beneficiaries.

The week-long camp will continue till Tuesday next week. It is being organised by the Marwari Yuva Sangh of the city with the help of Ganjam district administration, Red Cross Society and Sarva Sikshya Abhiyan. Ganjam district Collector V.K. Pandian, State-level leaders of the Orissa unit of the Marwari Yuva Sangh, dignitaries of the city attended the inauguration ceremony of the mega camp.

Till now a camp organised at Baripada in Mayurbhanj district happens to be the biggest artificial limb fixation camp in Orissa. It was also organised by the Marwari Yuva Sangh. As many as 505 persons were fitted with artificial limbs at the Baripada camp. According to Mr. Pandian, the plans are to surpass this figure and provide artificial limbs to around 1,200 persons at the camp.

Camp project convenor Mulchand Mundra said the physically challenged persons identified earlier reached the camp. On the first day, their measurements were taken. Noted physician and expert of artificial limbs Birendra Pal and his team would fit them with the suitable artificial limbs. The beneficiaries would use their newly fitted artificial limbs at the camp so that minor defects could be rectified to make the artificial limbs more useful for them. The artificial limbs provided at the camp would be most modern of their kind and extra light for better usability.
