Charred remains: Residents looking at a burnt motorcycle in Hassan on Wednesday. HASSAN: Mallappa is a contractor and stays at Vallabhbhai Nagar here. At 2.30 a.m. on Wednesday, he saw thick smoke outside his house. On rushing out, he saw his motorcycle on fire. “I was shocked,” he said. Speaking to presspersons who visited the area, Mr. Mallappa said he immediately called the police control room. Then, he called the Fire Services Department, but by the time its personnel arrived, the motorcycle was destroyed. This was not an isolated incident. Six motorcycles in the vicinity, all parked inside the compound of houses were set afire. In Chippanakatte area, two motorcycles were set ablaze. Superintendent of Police K.V. Sharatchandra visited the spot. Speaking to The Hindu, he said the culprit or culprits could have jumped inside the compound wall, removed petrol from the tanks of the vehicles, and then used it to set them afire. “Investigation is on and those behind the incidents will be arrested,” he said. Many two-wheeler owners are in a state of shock after the incidents. Many of them park their vehicles outside their houses. Of late, two-wheeler theft is also on the rise in Hassan. Mr. Sharatchandra said a special team had been formed to investigate the incidents.
