Bandh to protest against SI’s suspension

Staff Correspondent

The police officer has been accused

of assaulting

an advocate

Madikeri: The Nagarika Samiti of Siddapur in Kodagu has said that a dawn-to-dusk bandh will be observed in Siddapur town on March 13, to demand reinstatement of P.P. Santosh Kumar, Sub-Inspector of Police of Siddapur town, who has been placed under suspension for “assaulting” an advocate.

Mr. Kumar was placed under suspension on Wednesday by Jeevan Kumar Gaonkar, Inspector-General of Police (Southern Range), following complaints lodged by the Bar Association, Virajpet. Mr. Kumar is accused of beating up an advocate from Virajpet at the Siddapur police station a few days ago in connection with a property dispute.

P.R. Bharat, convener of the samiti, and Ravi Chengappa, convener of Cauvery Sene, told presspersons in Siddapur on Wednesday that action initiated by the police officer was in accordance with the law. The advocate was involved in a property dispute with a person in Arecad village in Madikeri taluk.

Advocates in Virajpet had boycotted court proceedings on Tuesday demanding action against Mr. Kumar. Mr. Bharat said that anti-social activities had come down in and around Siddapur town since Mr. Kumar took over.

A bandh would be observed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday. If Mr. Kumar was not reinstated, the members would stage an indefinite dharna in front of the Siddapur police station, Mr. Bharat said. A one-hour bandh was observed in Siddapur town on Wednesday as a token of protest against the suspension of the police officer. Business and commercial establishments in Siddapur, Maldare, Nellihudikeri and surrounding areas would remain closed due to the bandh.
