‘Stringent laws are needed to ensure justice’ Chitradurga: The former MLA G.H. Tippareddy has said that fast-track courts should deal with cases related to acid attacks so that the victims get speedy justice. He was speaking after inaugurating a programme in connection with International Women’s Day, organised by the women’s wing of the district Congress at its party office here on Wednesday. Mr. Tippareddy said that owing to the delay in the delivery of justice and lack of stringent punishment for offenders, such crimes had been on the increase. Expressing dismay over dowry harassment cases in the State, Mr. Tippareddy said that stringent laws were needed to ensure justice. Referring to the Union Budget, he said that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government had reserved over Rs. 30,000 crore for the welfare of women under various schemes. “The UPA Government is committed to the welfare of women, and hence a large outlay has been made towards that,” he said. Grievance redressalZilla panchayat president Geeta Nandini Gowda regretted that that the grievance redressal cells, meant to solve problems related to women, were not functioning. “Many women suffer harassment, but do not register complaints with the cells. ‘Be vocal’They should realise that by not being open about their suffering, they are indirectly encouraging such violence,” she said. Echoing similar sentiments, Balraj, advocate, said women should come forward to seek justice.
