Residents and traders want an underpass

In bypass road to ensure free movement of public

People fear that movement between the town and the Cauvery will be affected

They have decided to stage a demonstration on March 19 to highlight this requirement

KULITHALAI: Residents and traders of the town have reiterated their demand for an underpass in the proposed Kulithalai by-pass forming part of the Karur-Tiruchi section of NH 67.

Since the by-pass runs between the town and River Cauvery near the hallowed Sri Kadambavaneswarar Temple, public fear that movement between the town and the river would be affected by the intervening road stretch.

Important occasions

“Thai Poosam and Masi Magam festivals of the Kadambavaneswarar Temple, car festival of Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Peralakundalamman Temple festivals besides important sacred occasions for all temple festivals in the Kulithalai, Krishnarayapuram and Thogamalai areas would be celebrated at the Kadamban thurai bathing ghat near the temple. Also, funeral for the deceased in the Kulithalai town would have to be conducted on the banks of the river at the burial ghat nearby. So it is important that an underpass to ensure free and unhindered movement of public is constructed between the temple and the river,” points out social activist R. C. Mamundia Pillai who had been fighting for a by-pass road for the Kulithalai town for several years now.

We have already communicated to the Collector, Karur MP, Kulithalai MLA, the National Highways Authority of India officials, and others concerned of the need to allow adequate space for the listed activities.

Since we are yet to know the status of our pleas we have decided to stage a demonstration on March 19 to highlight our requirement, says Mr. Pillai.

We hope that the officials concerned understand our plight and do the needful as quickly as possible.

Our demonstration would be basically to show the collective resolve and we would present our grievances yet again before the competent authorities to press our demand, he adds.

Support

Several organisations ranging from padayatra groups to traders have pledged their support to the cause and would be participating in the demonstration, Mr. Mamundia Pillai says.
