Forward: P. Murari, Advisor to FICCI president, addressing a seminar in Nagapattinam on Wednesday. NAGAPATTINAM: There is good scope for industrial development in the Cauvery delta region of Nagapattinam district in the State, said experts and senior IAS officials at the seminar on ‘Promoting Industrial Development in Nagapattinam District’ organised by the Tamil Nadu State Council of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) here on Wednesday. The Officer on Special Duty (Relief and Rehabilitation), Disaster Management and Mitigation Department of Tamil Nadu Government, C. V. Sankar said that entrepreneur spirit was essential in the district and they should take calculated risk. He pointed out that there was a good potential for industrial development in the district and critical areas had to be focused. We need to rope in with departments like tourism, agriculture, fisheries, etc. for starting new ventures. Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar, explained the tremendous scope for starting industries in the district, including tourism development and developing the Point Calimere bird sanctuary. Mr. Jawahar said that the broad gauge rail like between Tiruvarur and Nagore and Nagapattinam port works were progressing. Besides, steps have been taken to establish a green field airport and also a 2000-mw thermal power plant in the district in the near future. Trainings
Advisor to FICCI president, P. Murari, said that FICCI was in the forefront in the field of industrial development and would extend all assistance to the entrepreneurs for starting industries in the district. He said that considering the importance of exporting vegetables and fruits, FICCI was arranging training on good agricultural practices and one such training had been started in Tiruchi district. Mr. Murari pointed out that FICCI would help the district administration for starting such trainings on good agricultural practices in Nagapattinam district. Special initiativesThe Economic Affairs Officer, Poverty and Development Division of UNESCAP, Miguel Perez-Ludena stressed the need for special initiative for starting industries in the district by discussing with the experts and also on the viability of the projects. Former IAS officer A. M. Swaminathan, submitted a report that there were many hurdles including power supply, transport, availability of raw materials for starting major industries in Nagapattinam district. He suggested that medium and small industries including biomass based power plants, seaweed farming, making compressed mud earth blocks, dairying, poultry farming and fruits and vegetables processing units, rural BPOs, garment manufacturing, marine-based units could be started without much difficulty. Earlier, R. Ramamurthy, Chairman, Cyber Society of India and also Convenor of CSR Panel of Tamil Nadu State Council of FICCI, explained the objectives of the seminar. S. Ranganathan, general secretary of Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association, R. Sundaram, Chartered Accountant from Madurai, K. Venugopal, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, A. Thanikachalam, Lead District Manager took part in the seminar.
