Woman to face murder charge for smothering baby

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A court here has framed murder charge against a woman whose six-hour-old infant had died under mysterious circumstances at Lady Hardinge Medical College in August last year.

Additional Sessions Judge V. K. Bansal said marks of strangulation and smothering were found on the child’s body and autopsy confirmed the same.

Earlier, arguing against the charge of murder, Manju through her counsel had alleged that the child died as a result of mishandling by hospital staff. She also told the court that since she had a son, she wanted a daughter and there was no reason why she would have wanted to kill the newborn. However, the prosecution cited the post-mortem report which showed marks of nails, strangulation and smothering on the face of the baby girl. It alleged that the woman killed her daughter because she did not want a girl child.
