A platform for students to express their interest in experimentation
Novel apparatus: Students at the district science exhibition organised by the Directorate of Elementary Education at Annai Theresa Middle School in Coimbatore on Wednesday. — COIMBATORE: R. Ramkumar, an eighth standard student of Corporation Middle School, Pappanaickenpalayam, has an earnest appeal to all the people in the world. “Plant at least three trees a year,” he says. He has already planted three and hopes to do so every year. Ramkumar’s project talks about deforestation and the resultant rise in temperature, loss of habitats for wild animals and pollution. “Unless more trees are planted, we will not be able to handle the consequences of deforestation,” he says. An interesting display of various scientific phenomena makes the science exhibition on at the St. Theresa School in Puliakulam worth visiting. Organised for middle schools in Coimbatore, the exhibition gives a platform to students to express their interest in scientific experimentation and discovery. Innovative ideas such as escalators in temples indicate the scientific acumen of young minds. Instead of having winches in temples located atop hillocks, the temple authorities could try out an escalator that works on solar energy. It could avoid accidents caused by malfunctioning of winches. Students from Panchayat Union Middle School, Nadhegoundenpudur, have devised an alarm system for the LPG cylinder. The apparatus, which consists of an iron plate and a couple of springs, is designed to give a warning signal when the cylinder is becoming empty. The cylinder is placed on the iron plate. As the weight of the cylinder decreases, the compressed springs expand and the cylinder is raised. A student and a teacher from Kottamangalam School near Udumalpet have displayed a model of a flyover. The flyover sounds an alarm when vehicles carrying heavy load cross it. This would alert the traffic control personnel stationed at the base of the flyover and they could prevent accidents, P.Kathirvel, in class VIII, says. Models of a miniature seismograph and tsunami alarm were also displayed. “Science is something that should not be learnt by-heart. It should be learnt through experiments,” Chief Educational Officer S.Karmegam said while inaugurating the exhibition earlier during the day.
